According to YouTube’s help, existing members are notified by email at least 30 days before a price increase. In some countries the change must be accepted; check whether this applies to your account under Purchases and memberships.

In other countries, such as Australia, YouTube shows the current local prices at youtube.com/premium. According to YouTube's help, the annual membership is only offered in selected countries, including the US, Canada and Germany, but not in Australia.

Is the annual membership worth it?

According to YouTube, an annual membership is a one-off prepayment for one person. It does not renew automatically, cannot be paused and is not refunded by the provider. Compare the local yearly total with twelve monthly payments. Annual membership is only available in selected countries, and not for Family or Student plans.

YouTube Premium Family: cost and requirements

The person who signs up manages a Google family group and can invite up to five other people. According to YouTube, all members must share the same home address, use their own Google Account and must not have switched family groups in the past twelve months. Google Workspace accounts are not supported, and the family manager must be at least 18.

The cost per person is the local Family price divided by the number actually participating, up to six. Each person uses their own account, history and recommendations. If YouTube cannot confirm the shared household, the member’s Premium access can be paused.

Student plan

The Student plan is for people enrolled at a higher education institution. Eligibility is verified by SheerID. According to YouTube, the plan can be used for up to four consecutive years and must be re-verified every year. If you already have a paid membership, you need to cancel it before switching.

Premium Lite: what the lowest-priced plan includes

Premium Lite shows most videos without ads. According to YouTube, ads can still appear on music content, Shorts and when you search or browse. Downloads and background play work for most videos, but not for Shorts and music. YouTube Music Premium is not included.

Free trial

YouTube Premium is not free on a permanent basis, but YouTube often offers new members a free trial. According to YouTube's help, eligible people include those who have never been members or who cancelled their membership at least six months ago; if you tried Premium in the past twelve months, you will not get another trial. Only one trial is possible per payment method.

After the trial, the membership renews automatically at the current price unless you cancel first. You can see which offers apply to your account at youtube.com/paid_memberships.

How to cancel YouTube Premium

If you signed up directly with YouTube, cancel at youtube.com/paid_memberships via "Manage membership" and "Deactivate". If you are billed through Google Play or Apple, cancel in the subscription settings of Google Play or your Apple Account. You keep the benefits until the end of the paid period. An annual membership simply ends because it does not renew.

Comparing twelve months fairly

Compare offers for the same period, the same number of people and the same features. A seat in a family plan is not an individual plan of your own, and Premium Lite has no music benefits. Also check whether an offer renews automatically and which Google Account the membership runs on.
